Heinlein&#8217;s long short story, or short novel, &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Unpleasant_Profession_of_Jonathan_Hoag\">The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag<\/a>&#8216;, is being made into a movie.<\/p>\n<p>Being of a somewhat optimistic disposition, I hope this will turn out well. The attempts so far to turn Heinlein novels into movies have been disappointing (<em>The Puppet Masters<\/em>) or infuriating (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/?p=990\">Starship Troopers<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>But the movie is apparently being directed by Alex Proyas, of <em>The Crow<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hifi-writer.com\/he\/bdreviews\/darkcity.htm\"><em>Dark City<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<em>I, Robot<\/em> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hifi-writer.com\/he\/bdreviews\/knowing.htm\"><em>Knowing<\/em><\/a> fame. I think that the way he did<em> I, Robot<\/em> in particular was brilliant. He took Asimov&#8217;s main\u00a0device from the series of stories &#8212; exploring the unexpected consequences of the Three Laws of Robotics &#8212; and made them the centre of a story broadly appealing enough to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=irobot.htm\">pull in nearly $US350 million internationally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently plenty of people didn&#8217;t get it, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/reviews\/?id=1398&amp;p=.htm\">this dill<\/a>\u00a0who misses the point that the puzzle in this movie was that &#8216;man&#8217;s creation tries to get the better of him&#8217; even though man explicitly tried to prohibit this through the Three Laws.<\/p>\n<p>I shall forever love this anyway for the aftermath of the car crash scene.<\/p>\n<p>So I wish Proyas well and hope Heinlein at last gets the kind of movie he deserves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d missed this until now, but it looks like Robert A.
