Pan and Scan is a technique by which a widescreen movie is reformatted to full frame display on a 4:3 aspect ratio display, and the naive view was that it involved simply lopping off the left and right edges of the frame.<\/p>\n<p>All this came to mind today because I am in the process of (finally!) doing a VHS vs DVD vs Blu-ray comparison to appear in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avhub.com.au\/MagazineHomePage.aspx?MagazineID=4\"><em>Sound and Image<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and the VHS versions of the movies are, of course, in 4:3 format. And here&#8217;s what I find for <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hifi-writer.com\/he\/bdreviews\/independenceday.htm\">Independence Day<\/a><\/em>. First, this is the full frame for the VHS version:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/id4-ps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1040\" title=\"id4-ps\" src=\"http:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/id4-ps.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/id4-ps.jpg 500w, https:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/id4-ps-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and here is the full frame for the Blu-ray version:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/id4-ws.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1041\" title=\"id4-ws\" src=\"http:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/id4-ws.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/id4-ws.jpg 500w, https:\/\/hifi-writer.com\/wpblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/id4-ws-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, what do we actually see? Both frames have been heavily cropped.
